Ocean Technology
Foundation / University of Connecticut Maritime Study
Abroad Program

The Ocean Technology Foundation,
Zoomarine (an oceanographic education facility located in
southern Portugal) and the University of Connecticut have
partnered together to give undergraduate students the
opportunity to study
animal husbandry in a foreign country. OTF founded the program
and offers students scholarship
opportunities each year. Without Zoomarine's generous
support, this program would not be possible.

Students travel to Portugal for a one-month period where they
intern full time alongside the staff at Zoomarine, assisting in
all aspects of their daily jobs. Students assist in training,
exhibit cleaning and maintenance, diet preparation and daily
shows. They have an option of interning in various departments
working with marine mammals, turtles, birds, and other marine
animals.

On weekends students travel to areas in the
southern part of Portugal to sites of historical significance,
such as Henry the Navigator’s Compass, the coast of Sagres and a
13th century castle located in Silves. The last week of the
trip is spent in various towns travelling northward to the
capital city of Lisbon. |
