Archeology Program in Portugal
Rescued Turtles Return to the Ocean!
Zoomarine is Portugal's
premier oceanographic education facility and a long-time partner
in the SEMAPP program. Its new
Rehabilitation Center (Porto d'Abrigo do Zoomarine) is a temporary home to turtles, otters,
dolphins, seals and other animals, which arrive to the
Portuguese coast exhausted, ill, injured or simply disoriented
or are confiscated by Portuguese authorities. While in
rehabilitation, the animals are kept under a strict medical
plan, based on a carefully selected diet, adequate medication
(when necessary) and minimal human contact.
Once the rehabilitation process ends (which can vary from
several weeks to months), the animals that are classified as
clinically recovered are reintroduced into the wild, as close as
possible to the original habitat of the species. During the
SEMAPP expedition, Zoomarine
staff will be reintroducing turtles that have been rehabilitated
and are ready to return to the ocean.

Think
About It!
What are three
reasons why turtles strand? What action should be taken if you
find a live stranded turtle? What should you not do if
you find a stranded live dolphin? Where are the stranding "hot
spots" in your country? Which species are most vulnerable to
stranding?
