Ciência Viva is a non-profit association in Portugal that aims to promote public awareness of science, and bring together the scientific community and elementary and secondary schools.

Ciência Viva coordinated an essay contest for students who wanted to participate in the SEMAPP expedition. Using the "In the Deep Ocean" exhibit at Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve, they were asked to research the feasibility of locating an undersea habitat called Ocean Base One, in the waters off the Portuguese coast. They had to figure out where it could be located, based on undersea geology, ocean currents, and geography, and what kinds of challenges would be faced.

Six Portuguese high school students and 2 of their teachers will spend a day on board the ship during the exploration of Portimão canyon.  TPicture of styrofoam heads and cupshe day will be spent meeting the scientists, ship crew and submersible pilots, touring the ship, viewing the video footage of the dives, and exploring the submersible.  Students will discover a fun way to learn about the effects of pressure by decorating styrofoam cups and other figures (see picture at left) that will shrink when sent down to several hundred meters with the Delta submersible.
