Week 4 Update -
August 4

Our good streak of weather came to end this
week, and we were only able to do survey operations on Sunday
and Monday. The north winds picked up for the rest of the
week, but we are hoping to get back out to sea this Sunday,
weather permitting. The time ashore has been a
well-deserved break for the crew, who have been working long
hours and giving 200% of themselves over the past few weeks.
We have finally had some time to do survey data analysis,
conduct more media interviews, and prepare for switching over to
the survey vessel Lia when she arrives this weekend.
At left, Ryan Taylor, a
geophysicist with Osiris Projects, talks about sonar during a press
interview.

We usually head out to sea even if the
weather is marginal because we often don't know the sea state
until we get on site. The forecasts can be quite different
for inland and offshore regions. This was the case last
Saturday when we transited out to the search area and had to
turn around and return to port because it was unsafe to launch
the survey equipment. The day was not a total loss -- on
our way in, we responded to an S.O.S. from a small fishing
vessel whose engine had quit, and got them safely back to
Scarborough Harbor.
The tall ship Grand
Turk (below) sailing from Scarborough was an impressive site. The
ship is from the same era as the Bonhomme Richard, though a bit
earlier in the 1700's. The Bonhomme Richard was nearly
twice the size of the Grand Turk.
We are crossing our fingers for calm seas
next week...
