Week 3 Update -
July 27th
The excellent weather continued for most of
this week – we only lost one day of search time due to heavy
seas on Wednesday. To date, we have completed more than half of
our survey area (more than 25 square miles) and we may be able
to expand the survey area if time and weather permit.

We
had a very special guest on board on Monday – Captain Ian
Turner, the Hydrographer of the Royal Navy. Captain Turner
accompanied the team out to sea and assisted with sonar
interpretation, vessel operations, and of course, charting the
search area. It was an honor to have him on board!
So what are we finding
out there?
* Several existing wrecks that are listed on the UK
Hydrographic Office list (This is important for UKHO’s database,
because they don’t always have sonar images of these wrecks.)
* Several interesting targets that deserve further exploration (In phase two with a Remotely Operated Vehicles)
* Lots of boulders
* Fascinating seascapes

So what do
we do at sea for 13 hours??

There are always at least two people watching the data come in
on the computer, but sometimes we need a break...

And we do this...and when we're finished reading the entire
newspaper...

We
take turns driving the boat...
or
having discussions about past and current adventures.
On the outreach front, more than 70 people
attended a joint presentation by Melissa Ryan and Peter Reaveley
at the Bridlington Reference Library. Due to popular demand, a
repeat of the presentation is scheduled for Monday.
The video clip of the Virtual Field Trip to
Flamborough Head that we mentioned in Week 1 is now complete,
thanks to Peter Tuddenham of the College of Exploration. It is
seven minutes long and can be viewed at
