Week 2 Activities

Update Week 2 – July 21

We had one small glitch in operations this week:  the survey vessel we chartered was held up on a previous job in Holland for another week, which would mean pushing the start date back a week.  Fortunately, Osiris Projects outfitted a smaller but similar vessel, named Freja (pronounced Fray-uh, named after a sea god), to do the same surveying as the Lia, so we were able to spend our first day at sea on Tuesday, July 18.  We’ll move over to the Lia when she arrives early next week and continue operations.

We expected that there might be some bugs to work out, but Andy McLeay and his crew from Osiris are top-notch professionals and had everything under control.  On Tuesday, our first day out, we spent a very productive 13 hours collecting sonar and magnetometer data within our designated search area.  The sonar is so sensitive that it picks up even the smallest objects on the sea floor, and ridges in the sand that look like mountain ranges are actually less than a meter high.  See picture below left.

The rest of the week was just as productive, but there is some weather coming over the weekend, so we’ll hope it isn’t bad enough to hinder operations.  On the outreach front, Peter Reaveley and Jack Ringelberg gave presentations to a very interested group of folks who had met us back in March on our planning visit.  We also stopped in to say hello to the owners of the new Bonhomme Richard Guest House here in Bridlington to talk about our favorite topic.  The Bridlington Regeneration Partnership hosted a “Welcome Back to Brid” dinner for the team to see old friends and meet new ones.  More radio interviews and school visits also took place. Until next week...
